try looking at this it may help, even if its not that relevant.

it seems like something has associated an install with something like *.* - to find out how to check associations click here

probably is - a bit more than I know.

I had a check, and spoke with a few people at work - if its not that, spyware kept coming up, didn't bother trying to explain almost definately not that, it takes to long.

The only other thing is that an antivirus was enabled while an install was going on and screwed the program - I think they hinder almost as much as they help

Run housecall - its internet based, and from trend micro, will scan your computer and let you know about virii, spyware, etc. If you don't use them you may have something stupid, small and just plain annoying thats causing this problem.

Well if there's spyware in my computer it must be very clever it's not in the startup list, my task manager, an additional service or listed anywhere in the registry

Short of hiding the process from task manager there's not much else they can do to prevent me from finding out luckily i have a program i made that show's me everything running that includes dynamic link library's that could be running as executables.

damn thats nice, can't be hiding then.

Something must be corrupted,
hell its MS and installed of course its corrupted

Could be a bad install - or maybe its MS installer playing up - try removing that out of add or remove programs, then reinstalling it.

I might have to let it go through one time, i think i remeber having this problem previously a few times and i let it load all the way up and canceled and it seemed to not bug me for awhile.
