Hibernation loop in 2k

Running 2k w/ sp3 (or 4) a friends Sony tower is caught in some kind of loop.
It boots up, then goes right back into hibernation. He tried going into safe mode and choosing the two choices, but there is no difference, it still goes right back into hibernation.

I'm not sure what he did other than playing with the UPS tab under Power Options (he has no UPS). He also has that 'unplug or eject hardware' icon in the systen tray that he was changing the com port (not sure what he has hooked up other than a USB mouse).

Sorry for the short description, but that is all I have now untill I can get over there.

Any ideas?

The desktop doesn't settle down long enough to do anything!

Go in the bios and disable any power saving device. Make them all on. This will prevent the machine to go into hybernation I guess...
