Suse 10

OK, I've been experimenting with Linux for the past 2 years and I have finally found one that works right out of the box on my machine.

3 days ago I decided to download a iso of the SUSE10 evaluation DVD (its exactly the same as the retail box). I resized my NTFS partition to make room for my swap, root and /home partitions for linux.

When I installed SUSE 10 I was surprised to see that it found and set up my wireless "G" card (RT2500 based) completely automatically. It even connects to my wireless network automatically each time I reboot, no messing around in the console with ndiswrapper and iwconfig. It also detected my Nvidia card and set up the proper driver with acceleration enabled.

This is the first time ever that I have installed linux and all of the basics worked right out of the box. There were just a few things I had to do to get DVD and MP3's to play. It feels good to no longer be dependant on windows

Hi. I've also been running SuSE 10 (and 9.3), and have found that it's a pretty nice OS.

Guess I'm going to have to down load it and give it a try. I think I'll do a dual boot on my laptop.
Thanks for the 411

Downloading disc 1 2 and 3 right now. It's going to take a while, still need 4 and 5 after those are done.

Robbie, you'll need this link to tweak SuSE 10 for full use.

That bites.

I tried 2 or 3 times to download the DVD before I found out that I couldn't because I didn't have LFS (large file system) on my current OS.
At least that's what I was told by the guys at the Linux forum.

I got the cd's without any problems though.

Btw, nice to be here.

I don't know anything about LFS but it only took me 2 hours to download the DVD and it worked fine first try, maybe I was just lucky though.

Did you download it to a Windows OS or a linux OS?
I was trying to dl it to SuSE. It might work if I dl it on a Windows tower.

Downloading large files:
Downloading large files such as iso-images sometimes causes problems. Here are some tips how to avoid them:

When downloading the DVD ISO make sure your proxy and/or your download client support files larger than 2 GB. If the download stops prematurely close to that size (at approx. 180MB), your client most probably does not support large files. If you are using Linux, you can use Konqueror (KDE browser), curl or lftp (lukemftp). On Mac/OS Safari and the default ftp-client should work. If you are using Windows, FileZilla is worth a try.
I see they have a 5 cd download of the 64 bit version available now. That's what I want. The 64 bit was only on the DVD for awhile, so I went with the 32 bit cds.
So I should be able to dl the 64 bit version on one of my SuSE towers now.

Well I have some 600 pointers crunching away.
I'm told that Windows is a tad faster at folding, but Linux is free.

Having trouble all weekend getting these ISO's... Still having a little trouble with my router as well... think I fixed it though. I went into the router and loaded factory defaults and all seems better now. After I'm done with the download I'll go back into it and set it up kinda like I had it.

I have a box at home running 9.2, seems to fold fine :P Only problem I've encountered is it seems to stop and wait for me to restart it after every work unit. Grrrr
