Generic Host Process error

I reinstalled my system over the weekend, which I do about every 3-6 months, and I have a problem that I have never had before. After turning on my system and getting on the internet I get this popup error and IE crashes. I can go right back to where I was ans all is well . This is quite annoying. I have setup up windows 100's of times and never had this problem.

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Any help?????

Thanks

Do you have the Windows Firewall enabled? It sounds to me like you are getting hit by one of those viri that attack via the svchost vector.

I have a router as well as windows firewall. I have run antivirus and pest patrol to rule out spyware. This started happening as soon as I finished all the updates and driver installs to windows.

Sorry if you read post - wrong forum

It sounds like a problem we kept getting when I worked for MS to do with old printers or scanners - typically HP printers.

What you need to do is remove the printer from your computer, not just turn off

reboot computer

download latest drivers from manufacturers site

reconnect printer

I saw that on a site when I did a search. I have a NEC laser installed. Actually XP installed it automatically. I tried to find new drivers and NEC said to use the XP drivers.

Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module msxml3.dll, version 8.50.2162.0, fault address 0x0000a0a1.

this is the last error I got.

try http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;835183

the other thing is to uncheck enable third part browser extensions in Advanced under internet options

well, I bit the bullet and formatted and reinstalled. I have everything set up again except SP2 and all is well and stable. I will now install SP2 and see what happens.
