driver.cab file missing

My xp pro cd is in rough shape and when I went to reformat I found that setup cannot copy the driver.cab file....umm what'll happen if I skip the file?
Can I copy the file from a machine & throw it in after?
Suggestions pls?

If the CD is scratched you should be able to polish the scratches out of it.

I would try some T-Cut, don't know if it has the same name in the US. But, it is a cutting polish for car paint. Effectively it is very fine sand paper.

Or use one of those CD repair kits specifically for this.

I've polished the crap out of it, used a very very fine sand paper, then a finer piece, then a polishing compound, then buffing cloth. nada.

Have you tried replacing driver.cab with the version from SP2, by using the damaged XP CD to do a SP2 slipstream?

It could work, my XP disk was near destroyed before I slipstreamed it.
