You've just hit the main problem with that particular distro. It's a total bitch when it comes to doing things like that. Unfortunately i hit the same snag with my installation of ubuntu. In the end i just gave up and went back to slackware. The only thing i could suggest would be to try www.google.com/linux and search for "ubuntu ati driver install" and trawl through some threads of people with the same problem.

First off, it should be noted that despite many years of user complaints and requests, ATI's Linux drivers are still about as bad as ever. To put it simply, ATI couldn't give a rat's arse about you.

Now, if you are unlucky enough to have a "bitch" card, like the ATI 9100 IGP, and the Mobility 9000 that is used in Thinkpads. Prepare for one of the worst experiences of your life. Once again, this is ATI's suckiness, nobody else's.

Here is the Ubuntu (Dapper Drake) driver how-to.

Yea, as I said, ATI is the problem. Send them an angry email for me. I figure after a few million they might actually bother making their video cards work.
