Task manager gone!

Hi guys

My Task manager on XP pro no longer works I have tried Ctrl, Alt & Delete and also tried running it from the windows folder all I get is the egg timer for 2 sec's then nothing.

Any ideas??

Yeah, sounds like a system file is corrupt, goto start menu, click on run and type CMD, when the command promt opens type CHKDSK/F and it will schedule a checkdisk for your next restart.

This has fixed several of my windows problems.

Windows will not normally do a disk check unless a major crash event occurs.

Ah good plan however it would seem that the command promt is being used by another program.

task manager -> processes -> cmd.exe i believe.

yeah just thought of that *smacks head on desk* all ok now just need to stop the massive list of radom programs thats on there.

Do you mean programs that are running in the background?

If so go

Run>msconfig>startup and unselect items you do not want to start. Make sure you don't stop your antivirus and stuff like that. Try a few ata a time so if you get an error you can undo....

frees up alot of resource mem

I have the same problem!! My task manager is being "used" by another program.
When I tried to run CMD it said that it encountered an illegal action and must close, thankfully I backed up my C:\Windows files

Bad thing is, I don't know which files to replace

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!
