MPlayer / Xine. MPlayer works on everything, and is great as a CLI player.

AFAIK, MPlayer comes in both flavours, the command line being able to run any number of front ends. It definately works on the command line under linux and MacOS though.

Perhaps we should have asked what the media player was going to be used for, and if lack of GUI meant lack of graphical presentation (obviously a problem from video playback).
