Red Hat Patches Linux Apps


JULY 18, 2006 | Apparently, Microsoft isn't the only vendor who can call a Patch Tuesday.

In a series of announcements that might have made Microsoft envious, Linux vendor Red Hat today issued four patches designed to close security holes in its popular version of the operating system.

Red Hat said the new threats are "moderate" risks and should be eliminated with the installation of the new patches.

Actually, the vulnerability isn't as serious as it sounds, since most applications under linux don't run with Admin privs the way they do on Windows.

Granted, the most serious of these vulnerabilities could result in execution of arbitrary code, but the code would still be limited to the permissions granted to the user. Since Linux users generally do NOT run with Admin rights (unlike Windows users), the damage would be much less than the same vulnerability on a Windows system.
