| Et Tu Ubuntu!? Written by Daniel Saturday, 26 August 2006 The Register Linux patch becomes terminal pain Update malaise spreads By Robert Lemos, SecurityFocus Published Saturday 26th August 2006 08:02 GMT Many users of the increasingly popular Ubuntu Linux distribution found themselves thrown back to mid-1990s on Tuesday, when a botched update to the graphical X Window subsystem brought them face-to-face with the command-line terminal. | Didn't happen to me. I wonder what the patch actually did to disable the gui. Edit: here's the fix: http://www.ubuntu.com/FixForUpgradeIssue

| This is only really nasty for those who can't use the terminal to save their lives, or who don't have any other access to computers. So long as you can find the fix somewhere else, and are at least competent enough to install the fix in the terminal, then you're fine. I guess this is one of the nice things about having dial-up and rarely updating - you don't get hit with nasty 'patches' that blow everything up temporarily.

I haven't been using Ubuntu that much recently, used it for a few days then changed the boot drive settings so that the boot menu wouldn't be displayed. I never use autoupdate features of any software with the exceptions of antivirus, antispyware and firewall. I also don't use any microsoft security products as they seem to be more prone to attack than other developers software. Lucky for me that i didn't decide to start using and to update it on monday then.
