I think Mitchel has it right, this is Just Dell making nice and wisely avoiding unnecessary conflict.

I intend to purchase a Dell XPS M1210 in the next couple of months to replace my Dell C400 as my main workhorse laptop. I bought this one used, so I had no choice in the OS it came with, but I never used the WinXP install at all, running Fedora Core 4, 5 and now 6 on it instead.

When I get the M1210, I will be running Fedora Core 6 with Beryl on AIGLX, and I fully intend to ask for a discount over it. Upside of not getting their WinXP install is that you also don't have to put up with the massive steaming pile of slop that Dell insist on shipping with their machines.
