Exclamation Slow Windows XP disk performance?

Ok.. I'm seeing reports of Windows XP having some pretty awful disk performance in certain circumstances. Perhaps those who are running Windows XP could take a look and see how their machines size up?

I'm hearing that basic IDE systems work fine. That's a system with no RAID.

Systems with higher performing disk systems (SCSI and IDE RAID) would appear to have more problems. People are seeing some pathetically poor read or write speeds (or both!) on systems that should be capable of far more, and were under Win2K.

Things people have seen - normal write speeds and slow reads. Normal reads and slow writes, slow reads and writes.

In terms of slow, reports are that they're expecting 50Mbyte/sec and are seeing 12Mbyte/sec. This appears to be across several different chipsets, SCSI/RAID adapters and CPUs.

How does your system seem?

Member Edysalt was having the same problem with his Raid setup even after a fresh install with XP Pro. Ended up using a single drive since the Raid array wasn't doing much for him anyway (especially since it refused to work right with XP)... prior to that the same raid array ran fine on windows 2000.

Normal IDE, as you said, on my system running at spec.

Sorry, this just had to be done.. Overclocked-AMD has been having a few problems with XP and disk performace. Disk performance under XP is somewhere between 800% and 75% slower than under Win2K... As an example, this is his ATTO graph under Win2K

http://www.capital.net/~lvbrmb/atto.jpg

The drive in question consists of 12- 18 GB 15K cheetahs sitting on a Compaq 5304 controlller. (64bit/66mhz, 128 MB cache, U160) That screen shot is of 5 drives in RAID 5. The machine is Dual AMD 1800 MP's overclocked to 2000+'s on an MSI K7D board, 1/2 gig of ECC registed DDR, 500 watt PSU, Adaptec 2940U2W for the external plextor burner and cdrom.

Nice performance.. wish I could do that!
