Open source gets European boost

Some large firms like Oracle use open source software
The European Commission has added its voice to the debate about the use of open source software.

A report funded by the Commission concludes that the software could offer considerable savings to organisations with little effect on their business.

The report found that in "almost all" cases long-term costs could be reduced by switching from proprietary software produced by firms such as Microsoft.

Much as I like the results, one can't help but observe that 'A report funded by the Commission' reached the conclusion the commission paid for.

I don't think the commission is as biased as say, microsoft, since, AFAIK it does not make so much difference to them which software is used?

might make a financial difference... presumably they have an IT infrastructure that they need to keep running... but then again, its pretty damn hard to get an non bias opinion about anything. Just thought it would be of interest
