OEM Vista crack gets round 'phone home' activation
DarkReading

Oh God, you've set him off again..

JUST AS MY INBOX WAS RECOVERING from the flames from my last story on crackers/ hackers/pirates, along comes news of yet another exploit. APC mag carries details of a crack released by pirate horde Paradox, which allows a stolen installation of Vista to be activated and made fully-operational without phoning home to Redmond....

This isn't about stealing a copy of MS latest get Bill rich software. The gauntlet was thrown down when MS announced that it could not be done. There is now a quest for stardom. I read this last night and just laughed. Very crafty hack if you will.

Very clever. Device driver ftw! Now that's like game emulation itself! So this whole thing is a game! I think i've finally figured life out!

Bill knew it will be hacked. If he wants he can play tough. Every update can look and check for illegal OS instalments and render the OS unusable. Some AV are doing this already. Guess will wait a little and see.

But i dare say, that as with a lot of the XP Pirates, they simply won't download the updates, and they'll stick to AV's they know don't do this. And considering how quickly this patch was released, when service packs are released, it won't take long to crack it again. It's XP all over again, just a lot bigger considering how many people actually moved to the new OS this time.

Build a wall, make a ladder, dig a mote, build a bridge.
But nothing stops the traffic for long.
