My proxy server is still running Red Hat 7, I think. I haven't needed to do anything to it in like 4 years. It just sits there and runs.

Yeap, well I admin 5 servers runnning a mix of RHEL4 and RHEL3.

Big difference between that and RHEL5 is... well stuff doesn't work with 5 yet. And won't for some time. Virtuozzo doesn't support it propperly, and won't for some time, Plesk, Cpanel, etc are not going to support it for some time, and when they do, its going to break a heap of my scripts and programs.

Then there's the balancing act that is upgrading, in that you have to upgrade this, then that then that, then that, just to upgrade this again, then that again, then that again. Upgrade paths are more like upgrade mazes, with two steps back and one to the left for every one forward. The recent kernel releases have also used a heavily modified set of kernel headers which break many things due to name changes and case changes.

Essentially RHEL releases are like dog turds. If you try to flick it off the lawn when its freshly layed, its going to stink. If you leave it in the sun to ripen, mature, and turn white, its going to play ball nicely.
