Fedora 7, Linix made...well do-able so far!

Dsio and I worked late into the nigh, 5:00 AM here, he quit for supper.

We wanted to catch up any who are following our efforts in a previouse thread with an eye to giving Fedora a try themselves. After a bit of thought realized I had a pretty good tool for including any who are interested.

I saved the nights IM conversation for my own records, hey I'm going to have to this again right? NO MAN has the right to ask dsio to miss lunch twice in one lifetime!!

A word about IM and me. I will respond to Admin and my site partners. After numerous attempts, over years by my partners I'm finally persuaded it has it's uses getting site work done. That's business.

I don't otherwise use it and I won't otherwise use it for you.":O}
I sincerely hope that everyone understands this is just me and how I live my life, no feelings should be hurt by this and I'm not responsible if any are.

(02:26:19 AM) dsio: if you cant read this I'll murder you.
(02:27:37 AM) dsio: You home?
(02:27:46 AM) Daniel: I can, but it's backwards ":O}
(02:27:52 AM) dsio: Thank Allah.
(02:27:55 AM) dsio: backwards?
(02:28:14 AM) Daniel: A Dyslecic joke ":O}
(02:28:20 AM) dsio: right...
(02:28:31 AM) Daniel: Were to begin? ":O}
(02:28:35 AM) dsio: well ok, now... sound card.
(02:28:51 AM) Daniel: I'm listening ":O}
(02:28:54 AM) dsio: system -> administration -> sound card detection.
(02:29:03 AM) Daniel: Going
(02:29:18 AM) dsio: Hopefully you have the sound card plugged into some speakers or something (analog, not digital)
(02:30:07 AM) Daniel: I have it connected. I have sound from my Onboard, but it still won't reconize either
(02:30:18 AM) dsio: So the onboard sound is working?
(02:31:08 AM) Daniel: Yes I hear systen sound, but it doesn't detect when I hit test here, elsewhere it does!
(02:31:40 AM) Daniel: Should I switch over to the C-Media?
(02:31:43 AM) dsio: click on the settings tab, and tell me what default audio card id set to
(02:31:51 AM) dsio: *is
(02:32:03 AM) Daniel: Intel
(02:32:10 AM) dsio: default PCM device?
(02:32:39 AM) Daniel: AlC882 Analon, omn my quad speakes connect to omnboard
(02:33:08 AM) dsio: where it says Audio Cards Order near the bottom, does it have both sound cards listed there?
(02:33:21 AM) Daniel: Yes
(02:33:27 AM) Daniel: Intel 1st
(02:33:29 AM) dsio: which one is at the top?
(02:33:32 AM) dsio: ok cool
(02:33:46 AM) dsio: now double click on the little speaker in the top right of your screen.
(02:33:54 AM) dsio: it should bring up the volume control.
(02:34:23 AM) dsio: tell me what card is mentioned in the title bar of the volume control window
(02:34:41 AM) dsio: It should say Volume Control: (something)
(02:34:56 AM) Daniel: I see the speaker, but it just gives a menu
(02:35:19 AM) dsio: right click on it, and click Open Volume Control then
(02:36:27 AM) Daniel: It just gives work space options
(02:37:01 AM) Daniel: Always on top, like that
(02:37:34 AM) dsio: hmm.
(02:38:23 AM) Daniel: In settings, it "see" both, but fails the sound test, set to Intel now
(02:38:57 AM) Daniel: SORRY! that's in sound test!
(02:39:41 AM) Daniel: Damn thing says they are detected!
(02:40:22 AM) Daniel: Automatic detection of the sound card did not work. This audio device will not be available on the system.

You can create /root/scsconfig.log, /root/scsrun.log on the System tab and file a new bug
at http://bugzilla.redhat.com.

Please click OK to continue.
(02:41:01 AM) dsio: Try this way. close that, and go to System -> Preferences -> Personal -> Volume control
(02:41:32 AM) Daniel: There now
(02:41:51 AM) dsio: At the top bar, it says Volume Control: (something)
(02:41:58 AM) dsio: what sound card is listed at the top
(02:42:32 AM) Daniel: HDA Intel (Alsa mixer)
(02:42:40 AM) dsio: awesome
(02:43:00 AM) dsio: well it should all be right then.
(02:43:14 AM) dsio: we'll get you an audio player for some testing.
(02:43:16 AM) Daniel: But fails sound test LOL
(02:43:21 AM) dsio: who cares :P
(02:43:38 AM) dsio: ok, now what version do you have, 32 bit or 64 bit
(02:43:55 AM) Daniel: We need to re set security. I have comcast raido installed but it won't let me use it.
(02:44:06 AM) Daniel: 32
(02:44:39 AM) dsio: sorry whats that?
(02:45:05 AM) Daniel: Cable connect give me free tunes
(02:45:31 AM) dsio: hmm. work on that in a minute.
(02:45:42 AM) dsio: first, open a terminal and su to root
(02:45:49 AM) Daniel: OK, but might grabs us as we go.

(03:09:12 AM) dsio: now, I want you to right click on the top bar, just to the right of your 'Applications Places System' menus. there should be a large grey bar across the top, just right click somewhere on it, and click on Add to Panel.
(03:09:24 AM) Daniel: Anything fancy in installing the game subscription?
(03:09:37 AM) dsio: Yea, there is, which is why Id like to wait a bit on that
(03:09:49 AM) dsio: When you click on add to panel, a new window will pop up.
(03:09:55 AM) Daniel: OK
(03:10:28 AM) dsio: Click on 'Custom Application Launcher' (the top option) and click forward down the bottom.

(03:16:19 AM) Daniel: This one?
(03:16:27 AM) dsio: yea, the beryl icon
(03:16:40 AM) dsio: that icon is now a launcher that starts beryl.
(03:16:47 AM) Daniel: No I mean do I need to close this one?
(03:16:57 AM) dsio: just click and drag it to the middle of the screen
(03:17:23 AM) dsio: the important thing is you keep all windows away from the sides or top/bottom of the screen, else beryl can mangle them. if its in the center of the screen, no problems.
(03:17:36 AM) Daniel: Made an Icom on desk top
(03:18:04 AM) dsio: sorry?
(03:18:43 AM) Daniel: I thought you ment to drage Berl Icon to center of screen, made an Icon! ":O}
(03:18:49 AM) dsio: ah lol
(03:19:11 AM) Daniel: All closed but MSN
(03:19:31 AM) dsio: now click on the beryl icon on the top bar. just a single click.
(03:20:00 AM) Daniel: screen flashed
(03:20:15 AM) dsio: what that should have done, is created another red diamond icon in the top right area of the top bar.
(03:20:18 AM) Daniel: reduced to one work space
(03:21:06 AM) Daniel: stiil just the one
still jut the one
(03:21:30 AM) dsio: hmm. ok do it this way.

(03:24:21 AM) Daniel: That or I'm drunk!
(03:24:36 AM) dsio: hold down control and alt, then click and drag somewhere on the screen
(03:24:55 AM) dsio: CTRL + ALT + Left Click while dragging the mouse around
(03:25:26 AM) Daniel: ****ing AMAZING!
(03:26:18 AM) dsio: Do something else for me, right click on the top bar again, and click on Add To Panel again

(04:09:24 AM) dsio: dont forget to post what you've achieved to the peanut gallery. My point is thus proven, that a 60 year old dislexic bloke can setup beryl, nvidia drivers, sound, and media players/codecs under linux, which means if they can't then they're either lazy, or idiots.

Personally, I think this something of a treasure for those wishing to get a good start in Linux. ) I've copied it every where I can think of to save it! LOL

Things are really going well this time. Spend all my time in Linux on the site and when doing back end work... I have an appointment tomorrow to with Dsio to try and get my games up and running...will update with our progress...

To clarify, Dan is talking about using the subscription based software offered by Transgaming called Cedega. Cedega is based on Wine, and allows users to play games that use Microsoft's DirectX 9.0C on linux. The reason its needed, is that DirectX is not licensed by Microsoft, so the open source OpenGL/OpenAL are used to replace DirectX's equivilants under linux and MacOSX.

Cedega costs $5/month, but in that, you are given all updates and new versions, along with support from the developers, which is very useful.

There are many games that are not dependant on DirectX, and can be run natively under linux. Most people are surprised by the number of games that will run out of the box, with SDL instead of DirectX. Here's a short list:

Quote:
Civilization: Call to Power
Descent³
Doom 3
FreeSpace 2
Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.²
Heretic II
Heroes of Might and Magic III
Myth II
Quake 4
Rune
Rune: Halls of Valhalla
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Sim City 3000
Simutrans
Soldier of Fortune
Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament 2003
Unreal Tournament 2004
The new id software game, and UT2007 will no doubt be linux native as well. Some of these SDL games, such as UT2004, can actually play faster under linux than they do under windows.

It should also be noted that UT2004 on Linux was the first ever commercial 64 bit game, over a year and a half before it was released for Windows x64.

Simply download the .iso

Public Active Mirrors

You can get the full DVD, or if you prefer you can get the live CD to try it, and then opt to install from it should you want it. If you install via the live CD, you'll need to be connected to the net, as the insaller downloads a good proportion of the data during the install.

thank you for your reply i have found fedora site and it is free.
but it is confusing as to how to download the os.
they have all of these file names on a server and you click on one and it open up a hundred others.
they should just make it easy to download with like two or three links.

You can get the full DVD, or if you prefer you can get the live CD to try it, and then opt to install from it should you want it. If you install via the live CD, you'll need to be connected to the net, as the insaller downloads a good proportion of the data during the install.

and this is for fedora win xp right?
thanks for your reply by the way

Fedora winxp? I think you're a bit confused.

Fedora Linux is an operating system, it replaces Windows XP, it doesn't run <in> windows XP.

Honestly, I think Fedora isn't something you will enjoy, or find usable.

If you've had this trouble so far, there is absolutely no chance you will be able to use it. This isnt to be rude, its not the easiest thing in the world, but its something you really need some propper background knowledge for.
