drives letter

when i set up the windows, it put my first hard disk drive E (which now my system root drive) , and dvd rom C and my ram reader D
then i connected my old hard disk (IDE port) for copy some of my old data to this new hard drives,so when i connected it dvd-rom letter change from C to M and ram reader to N (my main hard disk have 7 drives), which mean my old harddisk used drive C , D and L ! (it has/had 3 partitions), then when i disconnect it , the dvd-rom letter didn't change back , so M , and ram reader N ,
ok , then i installed clone virtual drive , and set 2 drives ! the first v-drive become D and the other L
so i have
A floppy
D clone
E hard
F hard
G hard
H hard
I hard
J hard
K hard
L clone
M dvd-rom
N memory reader
still C is missing ,
so how can i make DVD rom and ram reader C and D , and v-drives M and N ?

Don't know what OS you are on, so my instructions may be slightly different than what you have, but they should be close enough to get you there.

Go to the Control Panel, then to your Administrative Tools (may be under Performance and Maintenance). Once in Administrative Tools, go to Computer Management, then select Disk Management.

That should bring up a display of all disks and partitions in your system. Right-click on a drive or parition that you want to change the drive letter on, and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths..."

That should fix you right up.

Now somebody explain to me in what universe the above set of instructions is easier to give a user than 'drop to a dos box and run diskmgmt.msc'?

I had a similar issue on an XP Home machine in the past, where it labeled the main hard disk, G: because there were already several non-windows partitions present on the machine.

The problem with having it called G: is that some installers with hardcoded paths (Including Photoshop and Dreamweaver believe it or not) wouldn't install at all. I tried the instructions Gizmo posted above, but it wouldn't let me change the drive letter of the primary hard disk partition (the option was greyed out), and upon reading the Microsoft help article on it, the only way to solve it was to reboot into recovery mode off the XP disk, and reassign the drive letter at the command line.

However the article warned that if you /did/ do this, it is extremely unlikely that your system will work again afterwards.

Because its not that command line geeky stuff.

Didn't you know MS is all gui, far in advance of linux.
