Need urgent help with excel, how to countif in Excel 2003

Excel 2007 has a formula called 'countif' where you can (for example) say how many females smoke. Where there is a table of data which has both males and females where both some males and some females smoke.

How can this be calculated in Excel 2003.

It is simply count if, but based on 2 (or more) criteria instead of 1.

It may be that countif doesn't exist in Excel 2003? If so, then the only thing I can think of might be a VBA macro?

I can't remember if you can do more than 1 column I think you have to create a 3rd column, testing each row, giving an output for each.

Code:
 =IF(TRUE=AND(A1="male",B1="no"),1,(IF(TRUE=AND(A1="male",B1="yes"),2,(IF(TRUE=AND(A1="female",B1="no"),3,4)))))
Just copy that formula down the row. Remember that you need to use the "" around each word.

Then:
Code:
 =COUNTIF(C1:C100,1)
Using the criteria you want. There may be an easier, or more proper way to do this, but I can't remember off the top of my head.

EDIT:

remember Excel is case sensitive.
