ip questions

i'm connected to my isp using bridge connection.
in local area connection option , in internet properties,
the ip address is 192.168.1.100
the gateway is 192.168.1.1
i remember when i was talking to me isp administer he told me to make that 100 ,
and the connection of my bridge , "the connection i created" ,
when i type configip in comand, it says the ip of this is "89.221.82.236"
1.what happens if i make that 100 to 1 ,the same as my gateway ?
2.what is so called "internal and external ip" addresses?
3.when should i put internal ip addresses in some programs and when external ?
4.what each number of an ip tells about?

1st I suggest looking at some Comptia network+ documentation. (Networking for dummies or similar is a good book)

1. Each device on a LAN needs to have a unique IP address
so changing your computers IP to the same as your gateway will cause the network to stop working

2. Some IP's have been allocated for internal address - where they can be used by anybody, on their private LAN, others are 'public' and are used for connecting lans together (usually via ISP), these are registered by a company with an internet authority, such as American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN). These are the ones that are seen by people connecting to another remote computer (do a tracert to google.com and it should give their public IP)

3. Need more info about the programs. bittorrent programs usually want your external IP, if you have several computers on a network, others may want your internal IP

4. there is a small amount of info here : IPv4 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and here Subnetwork - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They are like an international telephone number.
There are several classes - which depends on how large the 1st number is. But basically you have the network part, and the host part. For 192.168.1.xxx, 192.168.1 is the network, and xxx the host. Therefore you could have several private networks connected via LAN 192.168.1.xxx, 192.168.2.xxx, etc and all connecting to a single gateway router with a single public address, e.g. 89.221.82.236

This is really brief, leaves out several important parts, and may not make much sense. If you are interested, please look at either the Comptia network+ or Cisco certifications (CCNA will go through all of that).
