Vista +1 details emerge

Written by Daniel
Thursday, 04 October 2007
MS big push forward stuggels to reach the point where "Citrix was two years ago, with streaming OSes."
Get ready for streaming OSes
By Charlie Demerjian: Thursday, 04 October 2007, 11:10 AM
The Inquirer

DETAILS ARE STARTING to emerge about what MS has planned for the next version of it's OS - possibly called Windows MeIII - but the presentations seen by the INQ refer to it as Vista +1. This particular presentation centered around two new key features of the OS, diskless PCs and ethernet storage... Front Page

This is so MS! What will they focus on next? Viruses? Hacker vulnerabilties? Better interface? Naw, a better way to prevent pirates! If this means we don't get disks ( What fun duel booting!) and HAVE to have a connection to MS, well some one must watch over us and what we do and who we do it with....

Actually, being able to run a diskless workstation is very desirable in a corporate setting; it makes centralized administration MUCH easier. You don't have to worry about people installing softare that you don't want on your network nearly as much, because they are all running an image managed on a central server. Unfortunately for MS (and as the article notes) there are already some very well established players in this arena.

How this plays in the home market though? I'm having a real hard time seeing the value proposition there. It really isn't practical to stream the OS across the Internet.

And I thought Vista and Me was bad.

I just can't believe the raw stupidity.

Sure having thin clients on a domain is one thing - and often a very good idea - hence Citrix.

But streaming an OS over my internet connection. Will MS pay for the speeds I need? Will they guarantee the integrity and security of my data, not snoop at what I have?

How do i boot if i don't have a pxe compatable nic? What I have to get a floppy?

Network storage? So i install my games and store all my data at their end as well? Loading times will be oh so very fast, with dial-up.

So MS is now MacroStupid!

We sort of do that here. We run term server. There is still a local OS but all the work is done on the server. It would be better for some things to have it disk less. I can't imagine running CAD or a Solidworks program over a network.

No, most of the applications where it is really useful are your basic office productivity kind of things. Applications that do heavy lifting like CAD/CAM/CAE, software development, graphical design, or audio processing really don't deal well with that kind of environment.

I had to upgrade video and memory as it is just to smooth out on the larger DWGs.

I heard yesterday a blip on the news stating that MS wants us to trust all our medical records on line...To MS! They are preparing a service to launch in a few years...Yeah! That's what I want to do with my medical records, give them to MS to sell to Phamacon.

Maybe we should have an international "Steal from Microsoft day" where everybody does, well, what Bill claims everybody's been doing, but we make it legal to do so. Just so Bill won't think so badly of us!

... Wonder if the UN would sponsor it? ":O}

I guess that is a good idea since he already accuses us.

This may not work out as I had hoped!
Since posting I've been sitting here unable to think of ANYTHING I want that MS has!! I guess I'd take some cash,( but only if it annoys Bill) but that's about it.

(I don't! I don't want it! I'll never want it, Bill's touched it!) ":O}
