Windows Home Server remains a tough sell

Microsoft has largely succeeded in getting a PC into the home, but its effort to put a server there will be an uphill battle.... Front Page

Considering that all of the needs/reasons behind the push can be met by w2k, I'm not surprised.

Basically they are talking about centralised content management. Simple network sharing with a max of 5 devices (XP Home) or 10 devices (w2k, XP pro) which include printers/faxes/PC's can be done simply and easily by a local machine, running an already familiar OS.

Having setup one 3-4 years ago with 6pc's, 2 printers, and a scanner. Using 1 computer with ~200GB HDD space as the centralised content manager, using w2k and XP pro, I cannot see a reason for it.

As far as I am aware *nix doesn't have those arbitrary limits inbuilt, and would therefore due to compatability (all OS's not just MS and maybe Mac in the future), be an even better home server.

Something 99% of all people have no use for is always going to be a tough sell.

Apparently they are unaware of their public image. Somehow they have confused people buying their products through monopolistic practices with people actually wanting to buy their products..
