| After some checking, it seems nvidia settings likes to overwrite itself when exiting, when it does this it loses the OC. I have come up with 2 options, 1.) know that numbers you put into .nvidia-settings-rc are real and do not open nvidia settings and the settings will stick (use the rc file to change config) 2.) I can write a script that will supply the settings on boot.. As far as DVD formatting goes, linux includes dvdrw-tools, most of the apps are just a gui front end for this app. GnomeBaker should do you well. Or you can just open a terminal and run: dvd+rw-format -force /dev/???? (enter the path to your player, should be /dev/cdrom)

And...You are right! I could have sworn that I re-booted and it stuck! But is now at defaults again when I check... Why doesn't Nvidia want to play with us? ":O}

| I just can't just used to these gui driven apps not doing what they should. I was thinking I should move with the times and stop using text files for everything, but I can see now that it's just not worth the effort.. It would probably easier to show people how to manage their stuff in text files than find work arounds for apps that do not do as expected.. As long as I don't use the gui nvidia settings and just use the rc file like I have for so long I am fine. It will reboot with those settings..

| Just checking on the past a bit... At this point the only change I should still have is the addition of the coolbit's option in Xorg server? The three lines we placeed in rc should have been removed..is this correct?

| Anytime you run the nvidia settings app it will overwrite the rc file. If you want your OC to stick upon reboot, do not run the nvidia settings app, just set it in the rc file. That is where the drivers get the information anyway, so whatever is set in there is what it will use until you open the gui menu nvidia settings.. I just can't seem to find the right words this morning.. late night, I've been on this same Gentoo install for 1 1/2 years so getting everything set back up after the crash is proving to be a challenge. still don't have my G15 working correctly..

| THAT"S why I had thought they had stuck! Sorry about Gentoo, you are living my Fedora nightmare! Everything is new! How will I ever gather all this together again? I just cling to my backups and hope I learn enough to get me through before I have to...it would also be good if I could avoid alienating The people helping me until I do! ":O} So...If I leave Xorg as it is with coolbits and go back and add the three line to Rc...without comments, I should be good to go? I know your a bit over whelmed at the moment, this can most diffently wait! Hope you don't have to many headachs along the way!

| If you check the rc file after reboot and the 3 lines are still there it has stuck. When the OS loads the driver the driver users that file to set the options. It requires a certain level of trust I guess.. Once I am all set up I will test a few startup scripts and see if my linux skills have improved. Don't worry about me giving up on you, I'll stick it out as long as you are willing to keep trying.. It's rough at first, but it gets easier.. Text files handle 99% of all operations so getting used to them is a good idea.

| Ah...well...you see... Cliff you may not have come across this bit of information in our forum as yet... I'm profoundly dyslexic. Letter or number sequence are perceptually jumbled at random. I can cut and I can paste. I can be happy with myself for being able to...that's about it! So if I get skidish when moving away from a graphical interface it's because in my world letters and numbers don't stay put, don't stay in the same sequence... This may help you, I lived 10 years in my last house, three years in this house... they are less than two miles apart... If my life depended on it I could not find my way to my last home and back. The lefts and rights will not stay in proper order. in my world someone keeps moving the streets around they are never in the same order as last time... with much repetition I can learn a route and mostly always had to. But if the route is interrupted, I become completely lost... I've spent my life lost... I'm use to it. To make matters worse I have a very poor memory for what I do get right, when I do get it right... I often remember wrongly what I did right. So here's what I want to hear from you: "We are going to use the Graphical interface today Daniel!" Or "Cut this here and paste it there!" I'd be ever so grateful! LOL In the long run I'm much better of with Graphics, they offer the repetition I need to find my way about. I see them at every boot and over time location settles down for me and things are where I expect them to be. But I do have a private little Lib. where I keep commands received fro Dsio and yourself...for that awful day when I must start over from scratch":O}

| I think the first post I had seen on you being dyslexic was just a few days ago. I am somewhat ignorant to the effects of it so we will have to teach each other. Which you just did by letting me know what I have to do for you. I think what I will do is put together a list of basic linux commands and their usage with examples. Once you have the commands in your head, it's pretty easy to get a handle on what to do with them. Most can be done with your eyes closed, eliminating a frustration on your end..

| Damn! Just dumped my response! About all that is to fought with difficulty to consider is my typing commands. I look at the example, I look at what I have typed and I can not see a difference, but Fedora can! LOL I'm sure I've got it right, it has to be a bug!I I MUST be down to one last little thing... I call Patti over, she corrects 8 things in two lines and Fedora kisses her ass as if she were a freaking Queen... (Do I sound bitter?":O} You've already demonstrated the primary quality I need in a teacher...patience. "Just give me many chances" Ricky Lee Jones

| OH I meant to say (Did say in the first draft) What's better than a small private lib, a bigger public Lib! That's great idea and it would certainly help. My Lib is pretty shabby, spread across E-mails, Saved PM and AOA posts, much of it is more "where to go to get..." than anything else. be great to have a good list and explanation.

| Is there a way to create a thread somewhat like a wikipage, where information can be added by different users? That way they could just be put in one place and edited or added to as time went on.. Don't know if this is possilble but would be cool if it was.

| Just open a thread in our OS section, request that Chit chat be kept to a minimum Every few weeks I'll cut and paste it to Our Faq and dump unnecessary posts... this has worked best in the past..but leaves much to be desired as it's not in any sort of order...if you would be willing to edit what we gather in the thread put in a more accessible form before I put it into our faq...? Once we begin I can temperately open Our faq to you for posting when you need to update, then close it again when your done for the day.,, very little to do on my part for what AOA gets out of it! But our own Linux Wiki would seem Ideal. If we can catch the imagination of Admin...":O}

| Doesn't sound like too much of a problem. It sure would help to have a lot of info in one thread.. Might convert a few more people over to the pain of linux.. I still have to finish up my Fedora Guide, which is running a little behind because of my crash. I installed it twice, once with VMware so that I could get screenshots of the installation screens. All of the files are still on my RAID0 array and I have access to all of them, none of the folders are named anymore though.. Might be easier just to install FC8 and grab the shots again.. I was tired of the array anyway. No speed advantage on a system that is always on..

| We could set up a wiki, but so far as I know there is no wiki that integrates with vBulletin that isn't either expensive, poorly supported, poorly implemented, or completely home-grown and unavailable to the public.

| Maybe a FAQ section thread, and a discussion thread in the regular forum. I could assemble the text once a week and upload it for a copy and paste or whatever would be acceptable. Discussion thread for linux basics, such as commands, terminology and some tips and tricks from all of our forum members would be a good start. It seems most linux users I know stick to doing things a certain way because it's what they know. It works so why bother looking for a different way. I'd like to see what others are doing with there linux installs, I could learn plenty myself.. I don't feel opening up a locked portion of the forum is needed, or even warranted. Anytime you step outside normal procedure something goes wrong. (I don't let anyone around the engines for my race car as they are being built and they are not allowed in the dyno room until I am ready to fire it up.)
