SuSe is most definately greener again

It is something I have looked at here, and some IT staff have tried to get funding to get a full business case, and research together.

Seems managers are just as much into M$ as M$ seems to be.

Same with us. But having a citrix server for approx 2k staff members use out of 6.5k would be better and easier to support than them accepting that vista and office 2k7 are not supported with the very same app.

I work for a university, the app is used for all student administration. From appplying, through to graduation, including fee calculations.

I'm currently involved in moving a VB.NET application over to PHP, so that it can run on a Linux server. As I pointed out to my customer "If it's written in PHP with a MySQL back end, you can run it on any server you can get your hands on. If it is written in VB.NET with a MSSQL back end, you're stuck with Windows."

When I pointed out that Linux servers with MySQL were cheaper hosting than Windows Servers with Microsoft SQL server, he figured that the hosting cost difference would pay for the development costs in about a year.

So often it is the way.

The cost difference between the business case + extra training + citrix upgrade + rollout + expected calls increase is less than 1 third of the cost of renewing the MS license for 3 years.

But management is stuck in the loop of MS = Good, MS says must move to vista = must move to vista, this is IT management who have IT backgrounds.

I can even do my job using Ubuntu and XP only for said app. My main job is to support those ~2000 people and I still use Ubuntu for 80% of what I do.

The fact that MySQL now has the Sun Microsystems brand behind it has now added a great deal of credibility to it that wasn't previously obvious. Sun is really one of those brands that even people with no tech knowledge identify with quality and reliability, and it will help the sales pitch.

I actually use Virtualbox with a WinXP instance for windows apps more than wine. I use Cedega for WoW and gaming, and proprietary software that doesn't play nicely with wine and is less common works 100% of the time when its a virtual XP instance.

Downside is you still have to have Windows around, but the upside is you get the stability and reliability of a Linux machine with the compatability of a Windows machine.

I tried running XP in VM but had a problem connecting with my rig at home for back up purposes. I didn't try real hard to resolve the problem because I was setting up on a Sunday and had to have a working unit Monday morning. It's a case where running XP on that particular machine makes me money so I just leave it alone.

The Cedega team and I had a falling out a while back. I had a two page thread where I was the only one that had replied to myself. It was up for a month before someone from the Cedega Team actually read it, which resulted in an immediate ban and deletion of the thread. That was the most fun I ever had out of Cedega..

As I progress through linux, I meet new people and have sent copies of the software to a few people so maybe someday I will get it working..
