Windows Home Server Broken Until June 2008
Jason Mick (Blog) - March 11, 2008 11:13 PM
DailyTech

The very hungry Windows Home Server continues to whet its appetite on unfortunate users files as the scope of the problem grows and grows

Like the children's book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the scope of the Windows Home Server bug simply grew and grew as it ate its way through users' files. Although Microsoft promised that a solution would be made available to resolve the current issues, a full fix will not be available until at least June 2008.... [Front page...]

Its such a pointless thing Home Server. I have a stupid number of computers in this house, probably about 8 running often, and 3 fulltime for a family of 5, and I have no need for a home server of any sort.

I don't know how their marketing people ever thought they could flog it to people.

Yeah, a dedicated home server is quite useless. I just set up one of my working computers to work as a simple home server on the side. Just run Samba, have a second HD to hold the info, and keep up with it. However, I'm typing from this 'server' right now. I couldn't imagine having a dedicated headless server for fewer than 15 computers, though. Just seems worthless, IMO.

Also, my 'server' is made from old parts, running linux. So I didn't even spend any money on it. Just a few hours getting it set up properly (about the same amount of time you'd probably spend on a WHS), and it's good. Samba is damn easy if you know your way around smb.conf.

I run what could be called a home server, it serves a number of purposes from htpc, central media server for the household, keeping backups for my home and business and storage of files for my website. Linux serves the purpose just fine for those jobs.

Without MS I guess we would just have to wait until the next company with an agenda started producing OS's
