However, it's actually pretty complex to work out just what kind of web server is actually running. I know of sites that actually use IIS as the web servers, but you end up going though an Apache setup for reverse proxying. Are sites like that running Apache or IIS?

Even more confusing still, I know of sites that run Windows/IIS as the platform but the majority of the dynamic content is served by a J2EE instance running within IIS. (SAP installations for example)

Yea, alot of things like Python/Ruby based websites have an arrangement like web server -> Apache for logging and control -> Squid for reverse proxy, thats why their market penetration is always vastly missunderstood.
