Exclamation Program issues after installing Vista SP1

In the release notes of Vista SP1 they said you might have driver issues after the installation of the package. They were right.

Point of reference: Stand alone installer SP1 installed on Vista Ultimate 32bit Edition
All Software & OS Updates installed. Programs Newest Builds.

Seems any program that requires exclusive access to the system's files will have to be reinstalled & repaired to work properly.
I had to do this with my Acronis backup software and HD management software. Even still, now my Acronis Software is Painfully slow to where I want to kill myself by the time if finally starts what I schedule it to do. Before it took only 1-2 seconds...now it's minutes...
I'm sure it's driver conflicts, but with what drivers? rrr
PITA getting it sorted out.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to get PerfectDisk 8 Pro build 67 to do a Boot time Defrag anymore! It fails to get exclusive access to the systems files.
Yes, I made sure I gave the program GOD status in Vista but still no go even after uninstalling it and reinstalling it. Still does regular defragging though. They will probably fix this with a update patch like they did when SP2 came out for XP and PerfectDisk had the same problem.

The other thing I noticed is that Vista shuts down faster now, but seems to take just a bit longer to load, but I think this is might be an issue with the system's files being scattered all over the partition and me not being able to defrag them back into their optimal position on the HD.

As far as Graphics & Audio drivers there were no issues & as a matter of a fact they seem to work better now with the SP installed!
I must admit, DX10 is much better looking & sounding than DX9...Too bad Vista hogs up so much of my 2GBs of memory. By the time my game's loaded it's at 70-85% memory usage.

Anybody else install this to see what results they get?

Well with the install of SP1 and this fix for another issue I was having:
Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? - Networking - Xoxide Forum Network

I've been running Vista for the last 3 days without the urge to reboot. Finally with SP1...my Zune works with Vista. I still have issues with my tv tuner card, but thats hauppage's fault for abandoning vista support for my admittedly ancient tuner. I can only change channels in DScaler, but the video stutters painfully in DScaler. Hauppage's WinTV blacks out whenever the screen saver tries to come in and I have to restart the program.

Of course that wasn't before giving me this hilarious message:

In my case I lost internet connectivity and all I had to do is to tell that I want to autoassign ip's on my lan card. I also noticed that is faster now (gaming loading time, applications switching and loading time..)

Thumbs up Issues Resolved!!!

Acronis and PerfectDisk issues RESOLVED and now Fixed!

With Acronis True Image Echo Workstation, it had to do with a conflict between...
Vista SP1 & Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.
Fix, Uninstalled Disk Director Suite 10 since I've finished with what I wanted to do with my HDs. Now it's fast again...

PerfectDisk 2008 Professional
Problem, Unable to do a Boot time Defrag on systems files.
Fix, Disabled some startup entries. RivaTuner, NM entries, Acronis entries, etc.

I still have No Idea exactly what was causing this because I re-enabled all the startup entries I disabled and it still works! LOL
I was trying to find the exact startup entry causing the problem, but all of them are enabled again and I can still do a Boot time defrag! Go figure...LOL
That's Windows for you.

Over all now, Vista SP1 has improved performance and FIXED the previous problems I was getting with "Side by side" errors launching games & gaming performance is Much Better!!!
You know, I might end up liking Vista after a while if they keep this up...

There was a kernel upgrade in SP1, I'm not sure how Windows deals with this as I just slipstreamed it into the DVD before I installed but in Linux you have to rebuild certain things against the new kernel when you upgrade. In Linux you will find that some things just won't build against the new kernel so you are forced to wait for updates or patches or go back to the old kernel.

This is just asinine, IMO, and is a major shortcoming of Linux. It's really stupid to have to recompile every driver on your system just because you upgraded to a new kernel. Fortunately, most of the drivers are already in the kernel tree, so they are automatically rebuilt when you build a new kernel, but for those drivers that aren't in the kernel tree it can be a real PITA.

One wonders how much longer the kernel devs are going to put up with fixing 14,000+ drivers every time they decide to change some kernel define......

It gets old, especially with the frequency of kernel releases these days. A scheduled release without the need for up to 9 revisions would be a good thing.

I'm still on a 2.6.22 ck-sources kernel, I've had to apply a couple of patches but other than that it's been fine so I won't upgrade until they come with some better than minor fixes.

Arrow Gaming Performance test-Vista vs XP

Yea, I'm still running Vista Ultimate SP1 & installing more programs & Tweaking as I go...Anyways...

Not sure if this is Vista hogging up resources and memory that's eating FPS or it's the diff between DX9 & DX10.
But 20 FPS is a BIG difference for the same settings!
One thing is for sure, Vista uses a LOT more memory at 45% so by the time the game is loaded it's at 80-90% physical usage!
With XP it starts at 21% & ends up around 60-75%...I think I need at least 4Gbs of memory installed to use it with games.
Too bad, I really like how DX10 looks...RRR
Opinions anyone?
Anyways, I'm done playing around with Vista this weekend & I'm back to using XP Pro so I can do some gaming with my installed 2Gbs of memory!

From what I gather, DX10 IS slower than DX9, but only because it offers more capability. I don't know if it is THAT much slower though.

If you use natural mod you'll see breathtaking scenery in Crysis and decent framerates on XP and Vista. It looks better than very high somehow manages to let you play at decent fps. This game is not very optimized I'd say that they proly wanted to make it run this bad.

One things for sure, I NEED another matching 2GB memory kit to be able to run Vista with all the "Eye candy" on & still have plenty of memory left to play my games too.

I did manage to find a way round Vista using too much memory before I launch a game like Crysis. I run ORTHOS for a couple of mins and it pages what's on the memory to pagefile & frees up a bunch of memory for my gam
