Maybe they'll construct a low overhead package of XP for low end laptops? Wait a minute, WTH was WinCE all about?

I think they where hoping that vista home basic would take the place of XP... but it has all of the negative aspects of vista... (i.e. bloat, driver support and so on and so forth) and none of the selling points (i.e. aero) as well as being (correct me if I'm wrong) cut down to the point where it doesn't offer the same level of abilities and uses that even XP Home offers.

MS has already addressed this issue:
Microsoft extends life of Windows XP for some low-cost PCs

XP will still be available for OEMs to put on these low-cost machines.

The same way a cattle rancher cares for his herd. Life is good until they put a hole in your head..

Office is going to face the same problems. Some people like Office2007's new interface, but I recently did a setup for a lady that is a small business owner, with a few employees that needed to start upgrading.

My recommendation to her (and to anyone else that asks) is to buy a built to order Dell, specced by myself, with a 3 year onsite warranty. In the old days I would advocate a custom build, or repairing old computers if needed, but at this point in time, I tell people to buy a Dell that suits their needs, with a full warranty, and when that warranty ends, whether the machine is working or no, to replace it with a new one every 3 years to stay under warranty.

Anyway, she got Office 2007 with the new machine, and said what the hell is that thing. She had no idea how to use it or where everything she had become familiar with over a decade had gone.

As such she asked me to get her a 2003 license to replace it.
