If you just want a router, no NAT, no anything else, then any version of linux will do it... Just turn IP Forwarding on, and ensure that the routing table is up to date.

If you want NAT, then you need IPChains/IPTables/Netfilter

Why linux for a router?

I use my PIII 800 as a router running win2k. (About all the slow POS is good for...) Just add another nic, and plug the computer betweent the source to be routed, and the hub. Win2K will make everything else pretty simple after that.

well for 1, win 2k is about a million times more likely to be hacked.. I would use 98se before I would use 2k.

I am going down tommorow to clean up 40 "blade" workstations of the kalez-h worm. If it hadda been linux, it woulda saved em a fortune!!

I use a hardware one also

Only because I bought it before I got into Linux, LOL. I should just sell it and use Linux with a hub.
