I don't think MS's current business model will even allow them to produce and OS that doesn't suck. Where's the fun in getting people to pay for something they would enjoy using, anybody could do that.

The problem is Redmond. It's all covered over with BMW's, Country clubs, Boutiques, Golf courses, Birkenstock's, crescents, $100 hair cuts. Everyone is dressed to the 9s and dinner parties with the boss are a high class affair. Imported Champagne of course, darling.
It's a town that is built on image. Substance is in the back of the bus. It's the philosophy of the whole area. Vista looks great but where it counts, there is something missing. That has been with all there OS. IMO-they figured out how to put together XP-finialy. The whle area lacks substance-so do the OS's

I look at free Fedora, Gento, Unbantu and I look at the progress they are making...My God you could NOT get a decent desktop out out Linux to save your soul 5 years...even three years ago! (Speaking as a consumer now, not as a Geek who loves the challenge and who can live with failure! ":O}

Then I look a Vista, at the pricing schemes, at layers of Anti pirate protection that exists mostly because of the ill will MS has earned over the years making an OS that's an extremely over priced invitation to criminal activity . I look at MS Incompetence and failure to deliver, failure to work with it's own partners half the time....

MS OS's are all about making Bill feel safe... that comes at a cost...to us.... Why go on paying that cost when Linux is getting better as fast as MS is...making Bill feel safe.

I didn't think about Linux but that is the best example.
How it looked was of little or no value. What was inside was solid as a rock!
It's not that windows couldn't be a good OS but the basic thinking of management is the flaw. Try to get one of the most sucsessful companies in the county to see that!
Ever work for a company where the owners basic beliefs were that he would value and take care of his emplyees. vs a different owners basic beliefs that there is allways someone else looking fore a job?
Just a different phyilosophy but what a difference to the employee.
Same...Same.

Redmond is actually stuck between a rock and a hard place, when you think about it.

Wall Street expects Redmond to keep cranking out good financial numbers every year. A cornerstone of that financial performance is that Windows is sold on just about every computer built, and every three years or so, MS comes out with a new version of Windows, which boosts their sales as people upgrade.

In addition, the computer industry itself has gotten addicted to the 3 year MS upgrade cycle as well, because each new iteration of the OS requires more powerful hardware, which allows the computer folks to sell a whole new set of machines.

The company I work for right now is in the midst of an ongoing revamp of its ENTIRE software platform. When we get finished rewriting everything, we'll end up with essentially what we already had, but it'll be new and shiny and take advantage of all the latest buzzwords in tech, require at least 10 times more hardware, and cost millions.

It makes me want to cry, especially when I think about what I could have accomplished with our existing applications if management would have allowed me. But of course, MY focus is on solving the customer's problems.
