Brazil's love of Linux

By Ina Fried

SAO PAULO, Brazil--Walk into the Ponto Frio electronics store here, which proudly displays a penguin-shaped logo, and you will find a healthy supply of Linux PCs alongside the usual Windows machines.

The store's Linux love is indicative of Brazil's deep ties to open-source software. Visit the country's universities and you'll hear about many projects using open-source software in new ways. Step into the Brazilian data centers of some of the world's most advanced financial institutions and you will see they depend on the open-source software for many key tasks.

How can they ever expect to be welcomed into the 1st world if nations making choices like that? It's hard to get out of the 3rd world thinking but the Penguin over Windows? That is not the kind of thinking that will get any country moved up the ladder.
By the way, what is the 2nd world? or the 4th? How many are there and who decides whice is which?

As I write this, I realize it has some truth to it. I have never heard of any other reference except the 3rd world nation. Interesting.

Ya know, I wondered this myself a long time ago, so I looked it up.

Best I can recall, it works something like this:

1st world is the democratic nations
2nd world is the communist nations
3rd world is everybody else

Generally speaking, the first and second world nations tend to be well-developed economically, which is why the term '3rd world' is generally used as a synonym for 'poor'. However, that is not the actual origin or meaning of the term.

The term '4th world' is also sometimes used to refer to those indeginous peoples who have been displaced by other cultures, IIRC.

Edit: Here's a link that provides a pretty succinct explanation: http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworl..._countries.htm

Edit: Here's a link that provides a pretty succinct explanation: First, Second, and Third World
I read your link and one thing I saw doesn't match the description they lay out. On the color map defining 1st, 2nd, and 3rd something struck me as very odd. They have Iceland as 1st world but they have Greenland as 2nd world. I WIKI Greenland and it's as I thought, they are aligned both political and economically, with Europe. What makes them 2nd world?

By in large, we pretty much make up anything to help us deny our own... You see...., that's our blood out there, we realize this as a Species and hide from it in nationhood...

I wish I could tell you why..

What I don't understand, I fear. We fear our neighbors, Daniel.

As much as you might hate to look at it, it's basic survival instinct. We, with our "higher" order brains forget that we are creatures of evolution just like every other creature on this earth of ours. Anything unknown is a potential threat until it's known other wise. Basic, 1,000,000,000 year old survival skills.

Greenland is a colon, uhh, overseas possession of Denmark. It's huge yet very few people live there. AFAIK, mostly Native Greenlanders who fish for a living. As it's very far north, most outsiders avoid it.
