Written by Daniel

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 is set to be released as a public beta version Thursday, Microsoft has confirmed.

The program, which has been under limited testing since October, will become available on the Microsoft TechNet site. Here's what you need to know before making the upgrade.

Might as well update right? If it allows My Vista Ultimate to run faster, then I'm in.

I wouldn't expect any significant performance improvements over Vista SP1 (by the way, you apparently have to install SP1 before you can install SP2, WTH is up with that?!)

While it is likely that there may be a few SPECIFIC things that SP2 improves on performance-wise, I would expect all of the low-hanging fruit got harvested with SP1, meaning that any additional performance gains are likely to be small and require a lot of work to get, or only affect a very limited set of use cases.

Near as I can tell, the 'Feature List' for Vista SP2 is pretty snooze-ville:
  • Support for the latest Bluetooth (2.1) and the Windows Connect Now Wi-Fi protocol
  • Make your RSS feeds sidebar gadget work faster and better
  • Give you the latest desktop search engine, Windows Search 4
  • Reduce the amount of resources used by sidebar gadgets
  • Support for exFAT

I just can't really see the above items having that much impact on most users.

However, there are a couple things that might be of benefit to a significant number of users:
  • Better Wi-Fi performance when exiting sleep mode (dunno what this is all about, but it sounds like it MIGHT have a significant impact).
  • Boost your power management efficiency by up to 10% (dunno if this means that it reduces power consumption by up to 10%, or if it means something else, but again, it sounds like it MIGHT have a significant impact).

Obviously, the items above will only really be of value to mobile computer users, but as the laptop market is now roughly half of all computers sold, that could be a big deal.

Mostly, though, I expect SP2 to have its biggest benefit in bug fixes.

I'm generally an early upgrader. Haven't had too much of a problem with updating early, with the notable exception of the time an OS X update destroyed my install. Luckily, I had the insight to backup the drive directly before updating and lost nothing. However, I haven't updated my computer in nearly a year because of the slow internet we've got over here. I figure there will be several hundred megabytes of updates waiting for me when we get home.

I left Vista recently and went back to XP Pro. If the SP2 greatly improves performance, then I might just be tempted to return. I hope installing it will not turn to be as troublesome as SP1 was for me.

The right programs make it painless as well. If you find one that will do incremental backups (so it only writes files that have been created or changed since the last backup) then it's quick, and generally you can schedule them for late at night as well.

For back ups to work over the long haul, I think they have to be easy to use and RELIABLE...
