Citrix Giving Away XenServer Enterprise For Free, Why?

Written by Daniel
Wednesday, 18 March 2009

Citrix (NSDQ: CTXS) just upped the ante on VMWare and Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) with its recent announcement that XenServer Enterprise, along with many of its high availability features, will be given away for free.

We caught up with Citrix CTO, Simon Crosby, to get his take on the new Citrix server virtualization strategy, read on to hear what he had to say. [Front page...]

Ah... I can answer this...

I actually use Xenserver Enterprise on a few machines, we were paying for it, but as of this month its now free.

VMWare costs money, Xen in itself is free (open source GPL) but XenServer is not. XenServer is a quirky little bitch of a thing to run that forces you to use windows to manage your linux servers because they're afraid that if they made a Linux management client it would get GPL infected and cost them their IP. But I digress.

They want to kill VMWare. Being cheaper than VMWare (free) will get them customers, possibly lots. I do believe they might put the price back in two years after people are so invested in their Xen implementation that it would cost more to re-engineer network infrastructure than to simply pay for the license fee, but for now their big concern is VMWare.

Citrix paid a lot for Xensource, US$500M to be exact, and Xensource might be worth that in some metaphorical sense, but the fact is Xen is free and GPLed and that isn't going to change. They're trying to add value to their particular flavor of Xen by making it more windows mixed environment friendly, putting a windows management client out and giving it a feel that's almost like dealing with a registry (Seriously if you try to do anything on the command line, Xenserver drives you insane with convoluted RNG ID numbers for every server, asset, device, NIC, IP, you name it to the point where using the windows client sounds more sane.)

But yea, I use it. Its convenient in some ways when provisioning servers, right up until it goes wrong, but that hasn't happened yet.
