Owch - any software developer who has used a "enter the registration key" mechanism to validate software, without paying patent rights, could be hit by this. That's probably a very large number of software developers.

Hopefully, for them he'll be too busy spending the £260m. I would be...

The Irony! They stole the mechanism that prevents me from stealing from them...and they got caught!

(When I wasn't even stealing from them!! ":O}

Microsoft are challenging the patent on the basis of obviousness (which is predictable). There is some basis for argument on the whole obviousness issue, but remembering that the patent was filed in 1993, and igoring for the moment my views on the whole issue of the patenting of software algorithms (and the fact that I'm not a lawyer), my reading of the patent leads me to believe that MS pretty much stuck their foot in it.

At the time Ric showed MS the technology, Uniloc was a tiny little outfit with very little financial wherewithal. I'm betting MS figured they could simply steal the technology and if Uniloc ever sued, MS could outlast them in court.

If MS wins, they strike at software patents, if they lose, it costs them 250 million english-squiggles. Not a bad situation.
