See, they are becoming more and more like M$ every day.

I've always seen them as the worst parts of MS and Intel...Control EVERY-THING!

What's the problem with this? Apple only warrant their software running on their computers. If you don't like this, then don't buy Apple products.

Hacking around with an OS to get it to run on different hardware is usually a large amount of work. Just look at how much effort it takes getting Linux running on new device!

Or how much effort it takes to get Windows 7 to work on an old device!

(like my dad's Canon MP170 printer)

In other words, it's the difference between:

"Oops, this won't work on an Atom Netbook, but we don't support that configuration so it doesn't really matter"

and

"Make darned sure this doesn't work on anything other than our hardware".

One can argue (based on Apple's previous actions) that it is the later but we don't honestly KNOW, hence Aidan's comment.
