Thumbs up Adobe Flash Player 10.1 beta with GPU Acceleration!

We know you don't actually care about 99 percent of the contents of the latest Flash Player update.
What you really want to know is whether those new 1080p YouTube streams will run smoothly on your machine thanks to the newly implemented graphics card video acceleration...

More...

I've personally installed & tested this out & it works and makes a HUGE diff when watching Youtube or Hulu vids on high resolution playback!
Very, very smooth now & worth the trouble of installing it! If you use an Nvidia card you'll need the latest driver v195.62 for it to be utilized.
I use Hulu all the time to watch some of my favorite TV series and I must say I'm very impressed with the playback now on Hulu at high resolution.

Doesn't appear to work on 64-bit, even with nspluginwrapper

Definitely 32bit only:

kaitain@jumpgate ~/downloads/install_flash_player_10_linux $ file libflashplayer.so
libflashplayer.so: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, stripped

Which is I suppose why the install script aborts if it's not an i386 to i686 architecture:

# check architecture
TEMPARCH=`uname -m`
case $TEMPARCH in
i[3456]86)
ARCH=i386
;;
*)
exit_cpu $TEMPARCH
;;
esac

Doing a quick ldd on the libflashplayer.so 10.1 binary reveals that it's happily picking up all the 32bit compat libraries on this system, except for libstdc++.so.6, for which it's pulling in the 64bit version. Strange...

That's interesting. On my system, it's not pulling in any 64-bit libraries.....

Ah, on closer inspection, it is using the 32 bit libstdc++.so.6. That library's just stored in an unusual path.

I was working late again last night *sigh*

Still, it seems 64 bit firefox still won't talk to anything other than native flash:
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so [/opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32]

I hate it when elves misbehave. Strange how it didn't work inside nspluginwrapper.

I was hoping they could use flash in a Direct X sort of way to allow 3D games to run better off the internet....
