bad bad bad idea
There are still thousands of people running XP and purchasing it. My work is still purchasing laptops from Tiger Direct that have XP pre-installed.
Is Microsoft ready to get thousands of emails/phone calls from frustrated users when they stop supporting it?

If everyone out there is left with the 2 choices available to them, they will do what MS wants which is move up to Windows 7.
(If you are a Windows fan like me...)

Choice 1: Stay with XP & "hope" that a H4X3R won't take over your machine not having any more security patches to fix the vulnerabilities in the OS.
(Yea...right!!!)

Choice 2: Move on & upgrade to Windows 7 or some other OS that is much safer & more secure that has continued OS support.
(not to mention easier to use)

Given the choices I would move on & upgrade which I've already done anyways...
Only my old system running a P4 2.4GHz with 2x512mbs of DDR-333
is running XP Pro & if I upgrade the memory to 2x1Gbs it will run Windows 7 x86 fine...so that's my choice.

I totally agree with you.
Its my work and companies like my work that have a hard time upgrading.
Specially because of the old programs and printers we use.
But at some point they are going to be forced to buy new Windows 2008 servers and Windows 7 will be the ultimate choice.
Fortunately, almost all of the laptops we have came pre-installed with XP and a Windows 7 disc. So we are ready.
I already built two machines with Windows 7 and they run almost flawlessly. 7 didn't like my old scanners but I ended up using virtualization of XP just for scanning.
So again, I agree, Win 7 is the best option and companies are going to be forced to upgrade even if they can't afford it. Sucks, but Microsoft is the winner in this round

Hey Booman, the same thing happened with me & my old HP 960 inkjet printer (2001) & 7...it just didn't see it.
So I manually added it into the system in the control panel (Hardware & Sound / add a Device) & selected my printer make & model.
After that it saw it & even installed the updated drivers to make it compatible with the new OS!

So see if you can do the same with your old stuff.

I think I tried that too. Installing by selecting the .inf file.
Actually it was pretty fun learning how to use the XP virtualization through Windows 7. I didn't know how to do it, so did some research, downloaded the files and installed.

Win 8 will be released before that 1000 days are up so you'll have 3 choices. I HATED IT!! when they stopped supporting win 98. I had that sucker running great and smooth, most of the resistance for the move for me was because I was kinda lazy and didn't wanna move forward and learn something new.

Honestly, I would love a win 7 box. I wouldn't bother with Vista if I don't have too. For us out there that love our XP boxes it just might be time to move on.

Vista was clearly a bodge job to make a buck, but I find Windows 7 is very good. No problems at all for me.

I'm curious what will happen with XP when they stop updating security patches?
Will all the existing XP systems get hacked?
Are hackers looking forward to this day to gain control over 1000s of computers because they found a loophole and Microsoft won't patch it up?
As far as I know, I'm going to keep all my XP machines offline.
Microsoft will probably keep a single download that includes most security patches like the do with Win 98 & 2000... so if I need to install XP again, hopefully I can get that download and just keep it on my server.
