Post Windows XP Service Pack 1

I know this was up on Microsofts Premier website

http://premierdownload.microsoft.com...sp1_en_x86.exe

Unfortunately, that link seems to no longer work.

Probably because the Inquirer had a link up to it yesterday, and Microsofts website got flooded with requests for the file.

This is what I want to know
Are their any known mirrors for this file.

I have 3 OEM copies of XP Pro, and I would like to patch the Systems that those OEM copies are loaded onto.

FYI the file is roughly 133MB's in size.

So if ya know of where a mirror to the XP Service Pack is.... please post a location.

Thanks in advance

Just use the 1106 version. I'm sure there are places with that available. It is identical byte for byte as what they have (had) at the MS site.

Curiouser and curiouser. I used the built-in update feature of XP Pro. MS informed me that two critical updates were necessary, SP1 for XP, and SP1 for IE6. I thought I'd get the SP1 update for IE6 installed first.
Okey doky, it installed just fine. After checking the Security and Advanced settings, I went to the XP update site again.

Funny, there were no critical updates required. Wow! 133 Mb worth of SP1 already installed. Someone must have given me three cable connections, right out of the blue. Thank you, masked stranger!

But seriously, I dunno if the XP update site is simply jammed, or if MS is lying to me... out of habit, you might say. It would be a lot better if they'd admit that they're jammed up tight, rather than
"Yes, you need this critical update. Oops, no you don't!"

And even curiouser. The SP1 update they offered, then didn't was ~33 Mb. "SP1 Express" I think they called it.

Oh wizards of software, whom am I to believe? "SP1 Express," or 133 Mb of SP1?? TIA!

Bring the Noise's first posted DL site works, at least at 11AM, on the 10th of Sep. I DL'd the 133 Mb SP1 Update from it in about 25 minutes.

After I used SpyBot, Search and Destroy(love this prog! It's available at AOA Files) to negate the call home goody that updating IE6 with its own SP1 added to Windows Media Player(they're both as connected with each other as much as MS insisted that IE and Windows were-- before the judge called their bluff-- I then returned to XP's Update site and discovered that SP1 for XP was indeed available.

And thus my question: Should I have simply installed the SP1 update in the 133 Mb format? Or used two hours to DL and install what turned out to be the ~50 Mb SP1 that was tailored to my version of XP Pro? My copy of XP is recent, it has some updates that earlier versions don't have.

Candidly, I don't know.

I think you nailed it on the head: the first download from M$ was "tailored" for your PC, so the whole thing probably isn't needed as you already had a good % of the updates in SP1.

That's my guess at least, still haven't bothered to do this myself...

I heard that XP SP1 undoes the hardware registration hacks, is a new hack of some sort needed? I've been relucatant to switch to XP, but now that it has matured a bit, perhaps I'll give it a shot if I don't have to tell redmond everytime I change a simple piece of hardware.

Nope, they still have "activation." The deal is, there is a threshhold for hardware changes that WinXP will allow without having to be reactivated. Once the threshhold is crossed, a new activation code is required which WinXP will either phone home to get, or you can phone MS the old fashioned way. Most things won't trigger it. New CPU, more memory, adding a new HD won't trigger activation. Changing the HD by ghosting it will trigger it. For Dell machines, only a change in the BIOS will trigger it. Any replacement of the mobo will trigger it. Basically, if WinXP thinks it's on a new machine, it will trigger activation.

There are ways around it for us hardware junkies.

Ever since WinNT, the "stub" service pack update has downloaded just what is needed. This is just as well, as the service pack is unified to a certain extent....

This includes localisation issues, such as the caps lock key in French DOS sesssions, or text mode problems in the Japanese command.com..

Of course the "Hard Disk Performance Is Slower Than You Expect" might get a few peoples attention!

I just successfully performed a SP1 update and it was only 45MB or so, I had a lot of the prior updates/patches already applied, so it did indeed tailor to my PC setup...

No issues thus far and nothing noticeably different (few more settings here and there).

There is one other important thing about SP1 that might make the update worthwhile for gamers. Pre-SP1, WinXP would only run DirectX games at a refresh rate of 75Hz. Now, it will run at the refresh rate set in Display Properties as long as the resolution the DirectX program is running is equal or less than the resolution in Display Properties. Eg. You have Display Properties set at 1024x768 at 100Hz. If DirectX is also running at 1024x768, you refresh rate will be 100Hz. If DirectX is running at 800x600, your refresh rate will be 100Hz. If DirectX is running at a higher resolution than that set in Display Properties, it will default to a refresh rate of 75Hz.

It's not perfect, but it seems to be a suitable compromise. This alone may make the download worthwhile for you gamers out there.

EDIT: I just uploaded a program to aoafiles.com that will fix this bug. It's called "REFORCE."
