| Is that a VIA chipset board? If so, I would try reinstalling the latest 4in1's. If that doesn't do the trick, then I have no other suggestions, other than what you've allready thought of, a repair install and reinstallation of SP1. I'm curious, did you install SP1 on a fresh install of Windows, a repair install, or just on top of the one you've been running? I'd read that doing it on top of an old install was not recommended, so I did a repair install, and I've been lucky enough to have no problems since.

| Thank you for the suggestions, RepoMan. It's an nForce 220D chipset. I found more KB suggestions through a non MS site. So far, nothing works. I may well have to nuke and pave, reinstall XP and get SP1 while the installation is still spring time fresh. Yes, this install of XP Pro was about 6 to 8 weeks old when I put SP1 on top of it. Thanks again!

| Cloasters, Have you tried slipstreaming SP1 into WinXP and doing a repair install from there? I should reinstall everything while maintaining all your settings and programs. EDIT: I haven't tried this myself yet, but in theory it should work. I've installed a slipstreamed WinXP on a new machine, but I haven't done so in repair mode. I'll give it a shot tomorrow and see how it works.

| After testing XP SP1 and 2K SP3 for several weeks at work with many different hardware configs, I've come to the firm conclusion that the only way to eliminate the issues are to uninstall it. Of course that won't completely uninstall it since there are plenty of reg keys and orphans left behind. SP1 has managed to hose a lab machine to the point of nuke and pave. Shutting down and powering up was only the beginning. It wouldn't complete a boot without rebooting once just as the desktop appeared. Using the Start button shutdown method did absolutely nothing. Sometimes it was actually greayd out and unclickable. Oddly enough, so was the Turn Off and Stand By button, leaving only the Cancel button left to click on. In true M$ form, this button didn't do a damn thing either. Once it finally booted, random reboots, glitchy graffix and intermittant sound sputters came. Then came the massive HDD data corruption. Not to mention the fact that it completely removed all traces of any drive but the master (C:/) Even wiped the floppy out. BIOS read them, Winblows didn't. You'd think this was the end, but not even close. USB driven digital cameras would fail to be recognized. USB audio devices like DSS recorders also failed to be recognized. USB printers, scanners...OK, just about every single USB device I plugged into it failed to be recognized (yes, I even manually entered the NATIVE XP DRIVERS to no avail) On to serial devices...lets just pass on this since not a single one worked either with Twain. M$ managed to screw the pooch and make the most basic of software, Twain, not work under its new flagship OS XP(oop) Now we'll enter the realm of software. Gaming suffered significant losses in quality, speed, performance and stability. Yes, I test games at work. Why? Becuase I can and they let me. Application software which once worked flawlessly was producing errors that the *.exe was corrupt and required a reinstall. Using 3D glasses was a pain in the arse...I'll leave it at that. In short, which is actually rather long, XP SP1 manages to fubar even the simplest of things. Although this was not the standard for all the XP systems tested and this was the worst case scenario, isn't it a bit unsettling that all this can happen to your rig if you install SP1? I did manage to correct each and every issue though with the click of a mouse...it was the Remove button for SP1. Once removed, every single error mentioned above was "magically cured" somehow. So, my suggestion for anyone thinking of installing XP SP1 is either to NOT install it, or make damn sure you select the option to allow for uninstall if/when you do install it.

| Wow! It looks like SP1 is the greatest boon mankind has ever known! Thank you, The Great Helmsman! Yes, yes, Mao was THE Great Helmsman, but we have a better architect of our future now! I gotta tell ya, the security updates in SP1 ARE probably necessary. Then again, any security in any MS product is an illusion, or temporary at best, let's face it. We'll see. If SP1 causes me more problems, I did choose the "make it uninstallable" feature. The box does actually shut down from within the OS, most of the time. Reboot? Never!!
