Ignorant question. Again. Ascii?

Question, please. AFAIK, pressing a key on a PC keyboard sends ASCII code to the machine. Is this code hardwired into the keyboard? Thank you for explaining this to a humble dim-bulb, if you have the time.

Actually, pressing a key on a keyboard doesn't send an ASCII code at all! How would you represent all of the special keys with ASCII codes?

In terms of the hardware, pressing a key on the keyboard sends a key down message, with the scan code of the key in it. Releasing the key sends a key up message, with the scan code in it. However, not all keys have a key up message.

These scan codes are fixed in the keyboard. The BIOS (or OS) in the machine will convert the scan codes into sensible characters for your application to understand.

If you want to see what the scan codes look like, take a look at this web page .

Fortunately, most people don't think about it too much!

I wonder if there's a gulf between thinking about it and understanding it? There sure is in my house!
Thank you a lot, Aedan!!
