Thinking Computers?

It's been the Holy Grail of computer for almost as long as we've had computers: making a computer 'think' the way a human being does. It's the stuff of science fiction; from Robbie the Robot to HAL. This week, a group of neuroscientists and bioengineers gathered at IBM's Almaden Research Center to talk congitive computing research, where it is at, where it is going, and why it is starting to be successful.

Do you have any experience with Artificial Intelligence (speech or image recognition, cognitive processes, learning algorithms)? Maybe you've done some research yourself? Tell us what you think!

Is being drunk [or similar] or talking to drunks classed as artificial intelligence? How about hangovers? I feel I have many an intelligent conversation when artifically excelled to another state.

Before we can make thinking machines, don't we need to have thinking people?

What about going for quantum computing first? It'd be so much easier

personally I would say lets understand all the human brain first and we better ave so riged rules programed into those robots otherwise I think some nukes are going to fly. Anyone here played a RTS game... Well you know how you do't have a problem with sending many troops to thier deaths if you win in the end, thats what it would be like for a robot controlling other robots.

These days, I spend all day playing SNES games on my computer, until I finally gather the will to do some assignments. Will my future computer go "Piss off. I don't want to do an assignment. I have a Frog suit, and I'm about to get to the giants world in Mario 3."
