Air Show

I had the pleasure of getting to go to the Thunderbirds 2002 Air Show today. We had a blast and watched more planes fly today than I've seen in the past year all together. Lots of neet stuff. In the next couple of posts I'm going to post a couple of pics but I'm going to try and set up one of those on line album thingies for the lot of them.

Enjoy....

BTW: catching these guys with a digital cam was a pain. Shutter delay was a real problem.

I had the chance to see the Thunderbirds a few years ago when they performed at the Blue Angel show here in Pensacola Fl. Pensacola is the home of the Blues so we have at least two shows a year. I havent been to one in a couple of years so it's about that time aain.

Almost as good as the Red Arrows

I saw the Blue Angels a few years back - never seen the Thunderbirds yet though.

Long time no see reddeath! hows it going? and red arrows are better IMO than any other aerobatic team in the world! The US guys have a pwoer to weight ration of over 1:1 red arrows have about .5:1 which makes it all the more impressive!

Afterburners awaken bad memories in me. The Blue Angels couldn't get a permit from the FAA to terrorize Seattle as part of the annual Seafair fest a few years ago. So Canada's Snow Birds filled in. No afterburners in the trainer's they flew. They put on a very nice show without them. Gasp! And quiet, too. Come back Snowbirds, we hardly knew ye.

Edit. I'm glad that you and your son had a great time at the air show. Excellent photo's, too!

The F-16 is surely a beautiful aircraft. Perhaps one of the prettiest.

Along with the WWII based de Havlilland Mosquito it is my favourite airplane.

I've always liked the P-38 myself. I find the thought of twin supercharged Allison V12s in such a light-weight package apealing. They were damn fast for prop driven planes, over 400MPH.

The Lightning was a good plane with a nice ammo load and excellent turns. It is not as pretty as the Mosquito tho!

The only problem with the lightening was the design didn't provide room for large enough intercoolers for the 1,750HP engines used toward the tail end of the war(origional engines were only 960HP). High pressure and high intake temperatures had a tendancy to lead to explosive predetonation in cylinders 11 and 12 when British fuel was burned in them. The P-38s in the South Pacific never saw these problems because they used higher octane American fuel, but the P-38s stationed in Europe got a reputation for being "unreliable" at high altitudes.

I know that the P-38 are sought after by the pylon racing circuit these days. Those suckers can cut through some air.
