Avatar backgrounds

What with all these funkadelic colors going on here I find that my avatar's background no longer matches the color around it. Here's my question: Does anybody know how to make an avatar that will automatically show the color of it's surroundings in it's background? When I ran OS/2 (years ago) one of the things I liked that I couldn't get with 95 or 98 was that the icon editor that came with OS/2 had 16 different color options, 14 were set to colors, one was set to the opposite of whatever the icon was in front of on the desktop and the other was set to show whatever was behind it on the desktop, ie: one color wasn't a color but was instead set to "transparent". I know the avatar's here aren't icons and it isn't the same thing but has anyone ever come across a graphics program that would let you make jpegs or gifs with one of the colors being set to transparent? Would something like that even be possible to use here?

You can make transparent .gifs. I managed that in photoshop, though I'm sure that any decen gif editor will let you do that.

I appreciate the effort but how do I get it so I can insert it into my avatar. If I just take a screen shot the background will be fixed at medium blue and whenever my post background isn't medium blue my image will look out of place. Just like I have now. I can change the background to another color but I'm hoping to get one that will change itself to always match it's surroundings.

Right click on the image and go to "Save image as"

Save it to wherever you save things. Then it's yours!
