Broadband through the outlet.

Broadband through power lines will soon be available to consumers at the end of this year. For those of you whose cable service doesn't offer broadband and you're too far from a central station for DSL, this may be a viable option.

I'll have to forward this on to some people I know. They can't get cable or DSL and Satalite is way to expensive. I hope they can get this.

Here's some of the pricing details. It can be as low as £15 per month but I believe this is subsidised for now.

According to the article, it's supposed to cost only about $30. That's a bargain as far as I'm concerned.

The thing that will make this form of broadband so popular is the fact that you will be able to get it anywhere. No out of cable system. Too far from co stuff to deal with. It also has the potential to become the next telco because of the bandwidth aval with this medium. Voip for the masses. A local power company is already talking of offering internet power and telephone on their system.

This is the idea of the century! I think the German's thought of this first? There is one drawback. Whatever happened to the "Internet 2?" We'll need Internet's 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and more to handle the traffic of nearly everyone on the Web. Much of the world still doesn't have electric power. If and when they get it, we'll be up to "Internet Number 24,001."

And that will be a Good Thing. Prepare to pay for infrastructure!

Well, I'm not getting my hopes up that this will happen near here anytime soon.
But something like this would sure be a huge improvement for me.
The poor phone lines here limit me to 26.4 K.
Heck, I'd be happy to approach the limit of my 56K modem!

Well most of the infrastructre is paid for. I read a figure in a trade mag that the us has more dark fiber than active at this time. Not to mention the companies instead of installing 1 or 2 ducts for their long hauls got smart and installed from 6 to 12. open duct for more fiber.

Every country has more dark fiber than lit fiber. It doesn't cost much to install fiber, the bulk of the cost is in lighting it. I don't remember the exact costs anymore, but I think lighting it cost something like 10X more than laying it.

Thanks for the tip.
But the wiring from the phone jack (the only phone jack in this dump) goes directly to the box on the side of the house, and it is relatively new.
I live in a pretty rural area, and neither I, nor any of my neighbors ever connect any faster than 26.4.
The phone company said live with it, that's as good as it gets.
The company tech who came out here said something about too many digital to analog converters, and just old lines between here and town.
But who knows, maybe running heavier guage wire from here to the box would help.

Can't hurt.

my box is fairly new as well ,my problem was after it was split inside the house...hopefully it will help

funny i can home from work one day last year, and the cable guy was climbing the pole in the front yard , i asked him if we were ever going to get cable isp he replied that was just what he was doing running the lines and box's for digital cable

i looked at him and said as soon as you come down from that pole I'm going give you a big kiss

he started laughing and said he was never coming down

Thanks cloasters. Not many people pick up the avitar. I am a member of local #2 here in st. louis. Just happens to be the second oldest IBEW in the country. Local #1 is just up the street. They are a great union to be with. Now the company i work for does not like them i the least bit....... They say the union hinders their dealings with the employees.... More like we stick together and dont get screwd by the company.

I was a member of Local #46, Seattle long ago, it was the best union I ever joined. Local's #1 and #2, that's certainly at the heart of the matter!
