What To Buy.....

I am posing this question to you all for a friend.

My friend needs to build a fast, but reliable system for editing movies. What would you all recommend for, Processor, Video Card, Mother Board, Memory, Operating System, Sound Card, DVD Burner, Power Supply, Heatsink, etc? You get the idea. Water-cooling is out of the picture so it will have to be air-cooling. Overclocking may or may not be an option depending on the noise. System will be built using either an Antec or one of the same designed cases.

This might be one of those applications where you'd be best of deciding what software to buy first, and getting the best hardware to suit.

A dual processor workstation with 2Gb+ of Memory and Ultra 320 SCSI drives from SGI may be a better choice. x86 is so limited. Move on up to big iron!

yep i agree,

If your video editing then a fast AMD system with a very god quality DV card will be the best bet.

DV cards are usually a pain when sharing interupts, so motherboard chice will be tricky.

it may be that a commercial DV solution may be a better bet than a self build..

I think you're right. High speed P4 with some RDRAM should provide a better stream than an Athlon.

Money is no option? is that like no problem or a big problem?

If its no problem why not go with 2-4gigs of rd ram like mooky said and get a 3ghz p4 for the HTing, adaptec scsicard and some cheetah scsi hdds, and a semi pro pinacle video editing card.

would be pricey

Pentium shmentium. Go Octane 2 from Silicon Graphics. Dual 64-Bit MIPS processors(RISC) each with 2 Mb of L2 cache and a total of 8 Gb of SDRAM. What's not to like? dubya dubya dubya dot sgi.com/workstations .

The Silicon Graphics Fuel, TM is worth thinking about. It's less expensive. One MIPS CPU with a 4 Mb L2 cache, 4 Gb of RAM. It features a 200 Mhz FSB, too.

Your friend does speak Unix, ya?

Whoa thats going to be expensive! Any way you can persuade him to fold for team 45 on it? While we are at it, that Tbred of yours could really hammer out some units too...

As the budget for this monster box isn't stunted, may I suggest leaving any Tyan board on the dealer's shelf? They just ain't first class. Spend a few hundred more for an Intel Server board that sports a Serverworks chipset. It's probable that a SMP mainboard that's optimised for File Serving is better for Video duty than one optimised as a Web Server. Find out about this! It's even possible that a Workstation mainboard is better than any Server m'board for Video editing duties. You have to know--before saying bah-bye to the money!

Tyan's are fine for enthusiast's that want a dual processor rig without breaking the bank. Avoid Tyan for a professional machine, IMHO. Make sure of what RAM the m'board he or she decides on needs. Registered RAM is needed by most Server mainboards. It doesn't cost much more than plain DDR, from Crucial.

I'd go Quad Xeon with 4x73GB SCSI 320 drives.
