Im gonna say the one on the right is a temperature sensor... maybe the other wires (besides power wires) go to a thermister.

Nope, íts got nothing to do with temperature measurements... good guess though.

Well, we have a power input, a pair of flying leads, 4 LEDs and a buzzer. There are also two adjustments. It certainly measures something!

I'd guess that the IC in the circuit was an (quad perhaps?) op-amp, and was driving the LEDs/buzzer driver.

Maybe a device for measuring continuity/resistance (of something like fuses, lightbulbs etc), a basic "lie detector" (measuring resistance), or a device for measuring voltage (like a battery tester).

There you go. Its a resistance tester.

It measures between the blue and black wires.


If there is no resistance between the wires the green lamp will light up, and the buzzer will.. well... buzz. If there is low resistance the yellow lamp will light up, medium resistance orange, high resistance red.

Haha. Look at it this way. You need something simple enough for a group of people who are not electronics experts to build, and yet have /some/ practical use.

The circuit falls square into that category. They're usually fairly simple, and they usually interact with the outside world in some fashion.

Measuring something, be it resistance or voltage is generally a easy thing to do.
