High Speed Internet access now availibe in the middle of the sugar cane fields!

I live in a pretty rural area. It is getting less and less rural all the time but surgar cane fields and cow pasture still dominate the landscape out here.

I am only about 15 miles from the 10th largest town in LA. A bustleing metropolis of almost 35,000 people and they have DSL and Cable internet. I live within the radius of what DSL can deliver but unfortunetly phone lines don't run as the crow flies. So once a month AT&T sends me an email saying that they now have DSL in my area. When I go to apply they check my phone and tell me sorry, we can get you a satelite or dial up, but no DSL.

Well today I did my once a month check and found something new. They now can run a T1 line to my house. And it is really reasonible too. Just $0-$799 for instalation depending on requirements and a Low Low cost of only $499/month.

I can't afford it right now but maybe if I cut out some extras, like food, phone, and electricity, maybe then I could swing it.

Oh man! We pay like $50 a month for a 1mbit, and we share it by three, so I pay $17 a month..

Don't go with satellite, its crap IMHO. Is ISDN an option? My parents have it, its at least a lot better than 56k.

ISDN here costs a fortune compared with ADSL. Aboput £35 per month plus all your calls. You can get a 512kB for £26 per month. Doesn't make sense

Really? ISDN isn't much more expensive than a normal phone line here. £5 extra a month or so, for 2x64kbit...

Unfortunately yes. Call me tight but I'm not prepared to pay more at home for a service thats worse than I get at work for less.

Can't say I disagree with that logic, dod...

It's true. ISDN is very costly in the US. ~Twice as much as cable or DSL, for dial-up speed x2. 128 k for ~$100 per month. It bites.

Speed is not ISDNs only advantage to 56k. Being digital, you get a much more stable connection, and dialing takes half a second. No hand shaking squeaks like with the 56k.

But if it costs that much, its not really worth it. But here its a great alternative to 56k. I think dad pays about $50 a month for 80 hours online (which aren't used now that i don't live at home anymore)

Here in Fl I pay $34.95 a month for unlimited Cable. I check my connection a lot and its always between 2.0 mb and 2.8 mb. Advrage Dl 450kbs to 850 kbs & upload stays about 400kbs.

They used to have ISDN here but it was like $88/month. I haven't seen or heard of it in a long time, I think it went the way of the Dodo when ADSL came to town.

I'm not going to do a satelite hookup. They want to much, they say I have to have profesional instalation, and want to charge extra for multiple computers. Also they say I am not allowed to drag it along with me on vacation and stick it on the tounge of my travle trailer.

Looks like I am stuck sharing dialup between 3 computers for now.

Da pain. Da pain, boss. Ouch! The country sure is pretty and soothes the soul. Web wise? Like Side Show Bob of The Simpsons said when faced with the reality of rubbing his new bride's(Aunt Selma) feet. Shudder.

ISDN is probably still available. But what a rip!
