| This is appalling but not unexpected.
When Regan was in office defense consummed about 1/3 of our budget. Now it only eqauls about 1/5. There have been many many base closing and numerous other cutbacks. The nuber of active duty personel has been slashed while the number of reserves has swelled, to make up the gap.
The facilities have been trimmed down to be "more efficiant". Meaning that there is just enough houseing and medical facilities for the active duty personel. The reserves are left with substandard barrack, most of which were probibly built for WW2. And as for thequestion at the end of the article "Do you think that active duty personel are being treated differently than reserves?" Well that one is a no brainer.
The fact that reserves with injuries are still not being treated actually softens this for me. I know from first hand experiance that injuries are always treated, atleast in the Navy they were. But then again the Navy has a very very small amout of reserves, unlike the front line fighting forces. If injuries aren't being treated then thier facilities are truely streached way beyond capcity.
It seems like the logical thing to do would be to spread the load of sick and injured personel to as many bases as posible, to minimise the impact on houseing and medical at each base. But the Army rarely does what is logical.
As far as those that are claiming an illness, I can understand both points of view. The personel are claiming that they were fine befor service and are sick now. The Army doctors either can't find anything wrong with them or they can't find a cause for what is wrong with them, so they say it is genetic or prexisting. They just don't know what to do with these people. Also the Army has a long time history of denying heath claims that do not come from injury.
It's like a sick person saying "Only sick people take pills, so if I don't take my medication then I must not be sick". The average person with an IQ higher than that of room tempiture knows that that is just self delusion and not taking your meds will almost always make things worse, not better.
But the Army continues to keep telling people that there is nothing wrong with them or that it was preexisting or genetic. Because if that were true then nothing the Army has done could have made them sick. We just need to get them to remember Gulf War Syndrom or Agent Orange.
I have to side with the veterans on this one. I personally feel that only the Native American should be held in higher regard by our government than veterans. With Veterans being almost equal |
