I spent last summer driving 'round in my Dad's 156 (saloon, not estate. Far better looking).

It's quite fun to drive. Engine starts to sound really sweet at about 4000revs. Has positive gearbox (manual - didn't try the silly-speed). Nice handling. Slightly mushy power steering.

It looks great from afar, but (owners perception) it has an awful lot of problems:

It has a built-in rattle. Not covered by warranty
It has designed-in putty-soft paint, with lousy finish. Not covered by warranty.
It's engine has pretty badly implemented variable valve timing. Basically to get it to pull away without stalling, you need to give it revs. To any non-Alfa drivers, it sounds like you're thrashing the t!ts off it. Everybody who drives one says the same - it's not just my driving
Cost of high-revs = high thirst for oil
Other things like doors not being quite straight, internal finish being naff, seats wearing v quickly, aircon unit making wierd noises. Of course, none of this is covered by the warranty.

Oh, and if the dealer promises free courtesy car or collect and return servicing, leave, 'cos it won't happen.

Couple of minor bits: Forget looking out of the back window - it's the size of a postage stamp. Best use your wing mirrors for reversing.
Forget using your wing-mirrors - the tear-drop shape's very much form over function, and creates a huge blind-spot. Also, they're the size of postage stamps. Best use your back window for reversing.
If you do decide to reverse this beast, remember that however long or wide the car seems to be, there's another 6" of each that you can't see (due to the blind-spots).

Random: my mate's dad has an Alfa SUD (the one with the V6 you love). It sounds great and goes like brown-stuff off a shovel Lucky b.....
