Trumpet Tooting Robot

I find this amazing.

Story

I used to play a horn (Trombone) in HS Band. I can't even imagine what went into developing this robots "lips". Pushing the valves is no big deal but to create an embouchure (The way you hold your lips) to play a horn is something that a lot of humans can't even do much less a synthetic replication of lips.

I went and did a little research on this......

Latex lips help horn players

I looked for a sound byte but found nothing. That crossed my mind as well. I wonder what the Staccato sounds like with no tongue.

You don't use the tongue for staccato; at least, not if you are doing it right. It is all breath control (and doing staccato with breath control alone is a flaming b***h). I used to spend hours on my sax doing nothing but breath control exercises on staccato notes.

I know nothing about playing a reed horn. Playing into a mouthpiece though, I always used my tongue.

My staccato used to drive the girls wild.....

Stoping the vibration of either your lips or the reed using your tongue causes the tone to be modified such that the pitch changes at the last instant. There is no way to compensate for this. Stoping the vibration of the reed or your lips by abruptly reversing the air column for a short instant is extremely difficult, but results in a constant pitch.

If you listen very closely, you can tell the difference. This is the way my first instructor taught me, and this was reinforced with my successive instructors.
