HP to give Intel control of Itanium?

CNET News is reporting that HP is going to give Intel its interest in the Itanium architecture. The Inquirer has been reporting similar news. However, this article at the Inquirer makes one wonder about what exactly is going on at HP.

What do you think? Is this a good strategic move for HP, or is it just another indication that HP's leadership is asleep at the wheel?

Tell us what you think!

I think that HP has been relatively disappointed in the Itanium. Originally, they'd hoped to replace PA-RISC with Itanium, and it's become obvious that it just isn't going to happen. I'd suspect that HP has continued to work on PA-RISC in the background in case Itanium couldn't pull off the performance needed. As far as Alpha goes, I think that Compaq did a fairly good job of cutting it down.

I'd agree that Compaq did a pretty good job of gutting Alpha before HP came into the picture. I'm not so sure that HP has continued work on the PA-RISC stuff; at least, not anything significant. As I understand it, a lot of the PA-RISC team isn't there anymore, so the expertise they need isn't available.

Is HP still in the test equipment business, even? 20 years ago, if you wanted top notch test equipment, it was hard to go wrong with HP. I don't know if that is the case any more.

They may have been disappointed with it, but they're still buyin' it. $3 billion worth of it.
